Experience
ExperiencMore about my Elementary (K-6th) expertise I have 18 years' experience teaching mainly grades 2 through 5-all subjects. I taught gifted, ESOL and STEM in grades K-5. Tutoring methods include building hands-on learning and critical thinking skills. Reading- I taught phonics, pre-reading and reading skills using the balanced reading approach. This includes diagnosing and pre-assessing students' strength and weakness; forming guided reading groups with flexible homogeneous and heterogeneous groups. Students frequently moved back and forth based upon their needs. Students were aware of their progress based upon their formative and summative assessments. I integrated various strategies such as performing arts, debating, journaling and inquiry. Math- I taught Math in Guided Math Groups using the same procedure that I did with Guided Reading. I pre-assessed and students' strength and weakness; forming guided math groups with flexible homogeneous and heterogeneous arrangements. Students frequently moved back and forth based upon their needs. Students were aware of their progress based upon their formative and summative assessments. I integrated various strategies such as questioning, performance-based projects, interactive notebooks, and inquiry. Science-I frequently integrated science with literacy by tying in poetry, writing and pairing non-fiction w/ fictional titles to balance the concept; I merged performing arts with science concepts. Students frequently had a performance-task to complete at the end of a unit. I infused STEM design briefs or a STEM task to further engage students. Social Studies- I infused social studies with literacy. There were many opportunities to use performing arts to re-enact historical events. Each year I sought to include a fall and spring performance for students to share their knowledge with the grade level. Various other strategies such as poetry, debate, writing and pairing of non-fiction and fictional titles in Guided Reading.
